Author Visit at Junction 3 Library.

What a great start to Book Week at Cabot. We walked in the cold wind to Junction 3 to meet Polly Ho-Yen.

She talked to us about her ideas and how she would start writing a book. And that everyday ideas can be the start of a story.

Michael-Lee and Hamdi were lucky enough to help her with her talk.

Ancient Greek Newspaper Recount

We are using our text mapping skills to retell the events of Theseus and the Minotaur and Ancient Greek Myth.

Have a look at our video.

Clip 'n' Climb

Four Year 5 children were lucky enough to have an afternoon at the local climbing wall to experience the 'Clip 'n' Climb'.

After a safety video the children put on harnesses and took to the skies as they ascended 15 meters of climbing walls. Returning to the ground using the auto-belay system.

"It was lots of fun!" Kieran told the class.

Aisha A said that it was really scary!

A fun sport, everyone should have a go.

L'Art de la France

We studied George Seurat, a French painter who developed Pointillism. This is using dots to create paintings. The dots, up close, look like separate colours. When further away the colours blend. We used the iconic landmark the Eiffel Tower for our inspiration.

Here are some examples of our work:

Wow Day

For our Spring Term Topic 'Cycles' Year 5 had a Wow day to kick start the term.

The day started with children writing and perform raps using as many words with the root word 'cycl'.

We then moved onto learning about the water cycle; setting up an experiment and creating craft boards to show the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Finally we ended the day designing and building 1, 2 or 3 wheeled vehicles.

What a busy day!

Falconry

Yesterday, there was an unexpected event, it happened after lunchtime in the hall at 14:25.

Mike, who loves falconry, introduced his birds to us. There were loads of amazing fact and adorable birds.

One of the birds (the one in the picture above)
had a mother who was twice the size of him that is called an eagle owl and it has killed over 20 foxes! We heard him hoot!

Aisha A and Tariq were lucky enough to hold one of the birds.

Primary Maths Challenge

We are very proud that some pupils in our class took part in a National Maths Competition this week.  It was really tough - even Mrs Cartlidge couldn't answer all the questions in time!

Pupils will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze certificates for this round and we will find out in the next couple of weeks whether the scores of any Cabot pupils were high enough to go through to the final round in February.

Well done to Iman, Sakariya, Andrea-Marie, Lucas, Ismail, Abdishakur and Zubeyr for taking part.
